August of 2020 I swore into the Texas State Guard. Both of my Grandfathers were in the Army and I've always had great respect for our military. Serving in the Texas State Guard is an exciting new step for me. I am currently serving alongside full time college and working twenty-five hours a week to support myself.

Background:
The Texas State Guard (TXSG) has its roots starting back in the 1800’s with Stephen F. Austin colonial militia, which was created by the emperor of Mexico to unify colonists. This military force went through many changes through Texas history. Most recently the TXSG was revived in 1941 during WWII to provide state military forces and support for war time civil defense when thousands of Texas troops were deployed over seas.
The current mission of the Texas State Guard is to provide mission-ready military forces to assist state and local authorities in times of state emergency, to conduct homeland security, and mission support to augment the National Guard and Texas Air National Guard as required.
Enlistment
I chose to join the TXSG because it allows me to serve in a military capacity without having to put a hold on my other life goals. I’m excited to stretch myself, get real experience in emergency management, and serve others when they need it most.

Hurricane Laura
I had the opportunity to deploy with the Texas State Guard for Hurricane Laura in September of 2020. Due to an agreement between Governors evacuees from Lake Charles were boarded in Texas. I worked with a unit for three weeks assisting with the Emergency Tracking Network.
